Tavia initially disappeared from her grandmother's Auburn Hills, Michigan on February 5, 2012. She had been abducted by her non-custodial father, Sebastian Albert Campbell, whose parental rights had been terminated. They were located the next day in Detroit, Michigan.

Tavia disappeared a second time from Detroit on February 25, 2012. She was last seen at her guardian's residence in the in the 18500 block of McCormick at 4:15 a.m. She left a letter behind, saying she wanted to be with her mother.
