Sage disappeared from Raleigh, North Carolina on June 4, 2008. His non-custodial mother, Ana Belem Rayon Garcia, told Sage's father, Carlos Bermudez, that she had a family emergency in Tucson, Arizona and was going there with Sage. She took the child's passport, Social Security card and birth certificate with her, as well as the title to her car. Garcia subsequently emailed Carlos saying she had taken Sage to Mexico and would not be returning. A photograph of Garcia is posted below this case summary. Her date of birth is September 11, 1981, making her twenty-six at the time of Sage's abduction. She is described as a Mexican Hispanic female, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Carlos filed for his son's return to the United States under the terms of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Sage's return has been ordered and his father has been able to visit him a few times, but he remains in Mexico. His case remains unsolved.
