Yoshua, his twin brother Israel, and their older brother Yehezkel were abducted by their non-custodial mother. The last time they saw their father was at 7:30 a.m. on March 20, 2007 in their hometown of Boca Raton, Florida. The boys all attended the Hebrew Academy Community School, where their mother was a kindergarten teacher. At 9:14 p.m. that day, their maternal grandmother told their father that the children's mother, Smadar Hameiry, was on a plane to Brazil with the boys.

The father immediately reported his sons' abduction to the police, and filed for divorce the next day. The divorce was granted in September 2007 and the father was granted full custody of Israel, Yehezkel and Yoshua, but he has not had any contact with them since they went to Brazil. Hameiry and her sons are believed to be living in Sao Paulo, Brazil with Hameiry's parents or her brother.

Photographs of Hameiry are posted below this case summary. She speaks five languages and has three master's degrees in science and engineering. According to her ex-husband, she had a mental breakdown in February 2007 and was due to see a psychologist and a psychiatrist for an evaluation and anger management therapy. The father believes Hameiry took the children because she was afraid her mental problems would cause her to lose custody of them in a divorce settlement.

The Bordaty children's father has applied for their return to the United States under the terms of an international civil treaty, the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. The boys have not been recovered, however, and their cases remain unsolved.
