Gray was last seen in Ventura, California on December 13, 2007. She is believed to be with her boyfriend, Andrew Joshua Tafoya. He was released from a work furlough program the same day Gray disappeared, and allegedly stole a white 2008 Acura TSX from a dealership shortly afterward. Authorities believe Tafoya picked up Gray at Buena High School and they drove to the Mexican border at San Ysidro, California. The stolen Acura's plates are recorded as having entered Mexico that day. Neither Gray nor Tafoya have been heard from again.

Tafoya pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a minor earlier in 2007. The victim in that case was Gray, who was below the age of consent. He was sentenced to 210 days in jail and 36 months of probation, and was ordered to have no unsupervised contact with minors. He was placed on the work furlough program as part of his sentence. Tafoya is now wanted for car theft and for child stealing, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution in Gray's disappearance. Although authorities believe Gray went with Tafoya voluntarily, her parents did not give their consent and she is considered to be at risk due to Tafoya's criminal history. She left behind all her clothing and her cherished pet dog, and she has not had contact with her family since her disappearance, which is uncharacteristic of her.

Gray and Tafoya may still be in Mexico, or they may be traveling in the United States along the Mexican border. Gray's case remains unsolved.
