Hoffman came home to her residence 50 block of Leroy Street in River Rouge, Michigan in the early hours of June 29, 1986. She was badly bruised and told her daughter she had been beaten and raped the previous evening by two individuals known to her. Hoffman went to the hospital after the rape and a sexual assault kit was taken. Afterwards she returned to the home she shared with her daughter.

Hoffman asked her daughter not to call the police, but told her that the perpetrators "will not get away with this" and said she was going to confront the two men who raped her. She was last seen at approximately 2:00 p.m., walking away from her residence in the vicinity of the 50 block of Leroy Street in River Rouge, Michigan. She carrying a brown leather purse with a saddlebag-style flap over the center zipper at the time of her disappearance.

Hoffman apparently visited an Allegan, Michigan clinic on July 3, 1986, several days after her disappearance; she paid $33 for a tetanus shot and a diptheria immunization and there is a receipt of the transaction. She used the name Ruth S. Hall; Hall was her first husband's name. Hoffman was also given a traffic ticket for making an improper left turn and driving on an expired license in Belleville, Michigan on October 8, 1993. That time, she used the last name Russie, another ex-husband's name. Hoffman's daughter went to the address listed on the ticket, but her mother had apparently already moved away.

Hoffman's daughter has accused the River Rouge Police Department of badly mishandling the investigation into her mother's disappearance. Hoffman's investigative file with the River Rouge police was lost sometime after 1986. A missing persons report was filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in 2004 and the investigation began anew.

Public records indicate that Hoffman was alive as recently as 2003, but due to privacy laws, the information about her whereabouts in 2003 cannot be released to her relatives, and her present location and well-being have not been verified. Hoffman's daughter believes her mother became disoriented from the shock of the rape and may not remember her identity. Her case remains unsolved.
