    Details of Disappearance

Sabine was last seen in the area of 14th Street west and 26th Avenue in Bradenton, Florida on November 5, 2008. She has never been heard from again. Her cellular phone and purse disappeared with her. She was active in her community and belonged to many local organizations, and it's uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning.

Sabine and her husband, Thomas Buehler, own Haley's Motel in the 8100 block of Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach, Florida, on Santa Maria Island. She had been married for fourteen years, but she and her husband had separated six years before and she had been seeing another man for about a year. Thomas said he and Sabine remained very good friends and business partners, and police don't consider him a suspect in her case. Her boyfriend, William Joseph Cumber III, has a criminal record dating back to his teens. He was on parole for a 2005 conviction for arson when Sabine disappeared; he had burned down a former girlfriend's home. Cumber and Sabine had been living together for about five weeks prior to her disappearance, ever since he was released from prison. They weren't getting along and had decided to go to counseling, and Sabine reportedly planned to leave him. Cumber said he last saw her on November 4, the day before she went missing, when they had an argument about his cigarette smoking and she drove away in her car. Authorities are treating Cumber as a possible suspect in Sabine's disappearance. He was arrested for driving on a suspended license and violating probation in December 2008, and pleaded guilty in April 2009. In May, he was sentenced to thirteen years in prison. Photographs of him are posted below this case summary.

Police pulled over Sabine's white 2000 Pontiac Sunfire convertible at 2:30 a.m. the morning after she vanished, near near 12th Street Court west and 26th Avenue. Robert Corona was driving and two other men were passengers. Corona fled from the scene; his passengers stayed and spoke to the police. Corona, who has prior convictions for assault, burglary, robbery and resisting an officer, was apprehended a short time later and charged with resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license. A photo of him is posted below this case summary. He initially said he didn't know the Pontiac's owner, but later changed his story and said he and Sabine had partied together at the Gator Lounge on 14th Street west and were looking for cocaine, and an acquaintance gave him the car. Sabine's loved ones disbelieved the story, stating she is strongly against drug use and wouldn't even drink coffee or let people smoke cigarettes at her motel. In addition, people from the Gator Lounge don't remember ever seeing Musil-Buehler there. Corona told a third story, saying he found the car in the Gator Lounge parking lot, unlocked and with the keys inside, and he stole it. He was then charged with auto theft. He pleaded no contest in August 2009 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He hasn't faced charges in connection with Sabine's disappearance and investigators don't believe he was involved. Curiously, Cumber also frequented the Gator Lounge and had been arrested twice there.

A small amount of blood was found in the trunk of Sabine's vehicle and in the driver and passenger compartments. Parts of the seats and carpeting had been removed from it as well, and some of Sabine's clothes and personal items were in the trunk. Testing determined the blood was Sabine's, and authorities began treating her disappearance as a possible homicide.

On the night of November 16, eleven days after Sabine disappeared, Haley's Motel caught fire. No one was injured or killed in the blaze, but the a two-story duplex next to the motel was completely destroyed. The duplex included an office Musil-Buehler used regularly. Authorities determined the fire to be arson and named Cumber as the prime suspect, due to the circumstances. He hasn't been charged in the fire, however. Thomas cited the motel fire and Sabine's status as a missing person in March 2010, when he petitioned for relief from foreclosure. A bank has sued him and Sabine, claiming they owe $575,000 on non-motel property in the 500 block of 72nd Street in Holmes Beach.

In July 2011, some of Sabine's belongings were located in a thicket off Willow Avenue on Anna Maria Island. Not many details of the discovery were released to the press, but investigators said it looked as if the items had been there for a long time, and they began searching the area for Sabine's body. Nothing was located, however.

Sabine left behind ten birds, one dog and four cats. Her loved ones describe her as a compassionate, trusting woman. All of her pets were rescued animals, and she struck up her relationship with Cumber, a former employee, because she thought she could help him get a fresh start in life. In 2009, Thomas began the process to have her declared legally dead. If he is successful, he can collect a $300,000 policy on her life. The insurance company is fighting his claim, however.

Some agencies report Sabine disappeared from Holmes Beach. Her case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.
