Asvesta had abducted Adonios once before, in November 2005, when she took him to three-week trip Greece to visit relatives and then called his father, George Petroutsas, to say they wouldn't be returning. George filed for divorce and was granted sole custody of Adonios in December 2005, but Asvesta refused to comply with the order. In July 2007, George went to Greece and retrieved his son. Asvestas filed kidnapping charges against him, which are still outstanding. Adonios went through a period where he spent three months at a time with his father in the U.S., then three months with his mother in Greece. In 2010, sole custody was given to George, who lived in Capitola, California at the time.

Asvesta had one last visit with Adonios in Greece; he went there on May 1. Asvesta signed an affadavit promising to return him, and purchased return plane tickets. George maintained contact with his son through the telephone and video chats. Adonios and his maternal grandmother were fly from Athens, Greece to Miami, Florida on June 19, but they never arrived; Asvesta had canceled the tickets four days beforehand. A felony warrant was issued for her on August 31, 2010.

Asvesta and Adonios are believed to still be in Greece. George stated he's trying to get his son back through legal means and he's afraid to go back to Greece, where he has citizenship, because he thinks he may be arrested. Adonios's case remains unsolved.
