Rice was last seen in Ione, Arkansas between 2:00 and 2:30 a.m. on March 2, 2008. She left with two men in a pickup truck. The three of them had sold some drugs to Rice's cousin in Fort Smith, Arkansas and were on their way back home. Rice reportedly became upset, jumped out the window of the truck and walked into the woods in Ione. A man may have seen her in the woods about twelve hours after she left her cousin's home. She has never been heard from again. Her clothing and jacket were found in the woods a few days later. It had no blood on it, but there were marks indicating whoever had worn the jacket had been dragged over the ground.

Rice left behind five children, who live in Missouri and in the Booneville, Arkansas area. It's uncharacteristic of her to be out of contact with them. Her family stated she was involved with drugs and went through drug rehabilitation a few years before her disappearance. They describe her as a naive, trusting young woman.
