Scamurra was last seen in family's Amherst, New York at approximately 9:30 p.m. on July 1, 1984. She got into an argument with one of her siblings and left her family's Scamridge Curve residence. She was last seen walking toward North Forest Road. She has never been heard from again.

Scamurra was having personal problems at the time of her disappearance and the police originally believed she had run away from home. She left all her belongings behind, however, and apparently never contacted her loved ones again, which is unusual for a teen runaway. Authorities can find no evidence of an abduction in Scamurra's case, but they believe she is deceased. Her family has reportedly refused to cooperate with police in her disappearance. They maintain their innocence in her case, however, and none of them have been named as suspects. Scamurra's case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.
