Andrew and his siblings Nathan and Sydney were last seen in the 3100 block of south 600th Street in Greenfield, Indiana on October 17, 1995. Their parents, Steven Slinkard and Trena Faith Slinkard, were in the process of a divorce in 1995. Steven wanted a joint custody arrangement between himself and his ex-wife, Trena Faith Slinkard, until he found out Trena was planning to take the children to Texas. Steven then applied for and got full custody of Andrew, Nathan and Sydney and orders that the children were not to leave Indiana. Trena abducted them afterwards.

A warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was issued for her by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on March 26, 1996.
