Spires was last seen in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 14, 2010. A friend dropped her off at a cousin's house in the 100 block of Woodward Avenue. She left at 11:00 p.m. and has never been heard from again. She left behind her clothing, cellular phone charger and other belongings, taking only her purse. Spires lived with her father and stepmother in Barryton, Michigan at the time of her disappearance. She has no history of mental illness and her disappearance is considered suspicious because it's uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning or to be out of touch with her family.

In April 2011, four men were charged as accessories after the fact in Spires's disappearance, a crime that carries a sentence of five years in prison. The defendants are Anthony Walker, Anthony Darnell Rollin, Thomas Vernnon Bennett and Kepha Yaaqob Stutzman. Authorities believe the men gave cocaine and marijuana to Spires, then hid her body after she died. No one has been charged with causing her death, however, and her body hasn't been recovered. Investigators are treating her case as a homicide. It remains unsolved.
