Mixarai disappeared from Chandler, Arizona on May 15, 2010. Authorities believe she left of her own accord with Pedro Gaeta. Mixarai left home at 4:00 p.m. and told her family she was going out to get her hair done, but instead she left with Gaeta. She send text messages saying she was running away with him. Later messages indicated she had changed her mind and wanted to return home. A few days after Mixarai's disappearance, however, the text messages stopped coming.

There is grave concern for Mixarai's safety, as Gaeta is wanted in Tulsa, Oklahoma on first-degree murder charges. He had allegedly choked and beaten a woman, and in retaliation her father and brother broke out the windows in his house and car. Witnesses saw Gaeta confront the woman's brother and shoot him to death on November 21, 2009. He has a prior arrest record for assault and battery in 2008, but the charges were dropped in that case. He is not wanted in connection with Mixarai's disappearance.

At the time of her disappearance, Mixarai was studying cosmetology and made good grades. She met Gaeta through a family friend and they had talked to each other over the internet. Gaeta's mother, brother and some of his friends live in Tulsa, and he and Mixarai may travel there. They may also be in Texas or Mexico, where he also has ties. Gaeta is considered armed and dangerous and caution is advised when approaching him or Mixarai. Her disappearance remains unsolved.
